With the 1290 Super Adventure R, KTM has produced a machine which is world beating for its stated aim. That being ‘the most extreme off-road big adventure bike’. Back in the real world it’s a very brave buyer who’s going to fork out £14,499 on this bike and then thrash it in the sort of conditions we experienced on the launch.
KTM engineers fine-tuned this engine to give it a powerband that's more suitable for a luxury-adventure tourer than a complete nutcase like the Super Duke R. Claimed horsepower is 160 (compared to Oddometer: 4,143. Location: Wales, UK. Seems a fair precis. Watch out for tightening that chain though, yes it slaps, but if anything I prefer to run it at the loose end, without any linkage it can go a bit tight on compression of the suspension, just saying. #2.

Lofting the front across the erosion mounds, switching lines to keep out of the erosion ruts and getting a little sideways through the turns, the bike absolutely begged for more. Up front the KTM1290 Super Adventure R is fitted with 48mm WP USD forks with extra stiff fork springs and a 21-inch spoked front wheel.

The 890 Adventure has a sporty and agile feel and is comfortable enough to ride all day. The new 43mm Apex front forks now include separate compression and rebound damping adjusters, and the rear shock offers adjustable preload and rebound. The suspension works better than I expected.

I'm 6'1" and have KTM 52mm risers on but about 10mm too low. Not stopping me getting out and about or standing up but think comfort could be improved slightly.
